Solving Problems
Retaining Flexibility |
1) We build Rapport
An essential pre-requisite for good therapy is that you are comfortable with and trust in the motives and competence of your LHGC therapist:
- We will listen carefully to you and reflect that back to you.
- We will set goals and a way of working that makes sense to you.
- We will explain what is happening to you so again it makes sense and also takes blame away from you.
- If necessary we will offer advice – after all you are seeing us, amongst other things, to borrow our intelligence.

2) We understand Emotions
Emotions are our greatest resource – a call to action.
When we can discern what our emotions are saying and then either act decisively or dismiss the call as not needed, we are emotionally healthy.
But when the emotion is too strong and so inhibits sensible action or freezes us in inaction, then we will suffer – as we desperately try to cope with the resultant stress. And often the initial emotion will build as we find ourselves locked into inaction that generates further worry and useless rumination – unable to act appropriately and with the emotion screaming out to us.

3) We will get your Arousal down
High arousal should be understood and acted upon and LHGC therapists will help you do this. Reducing arousal is the key both to good therapy and long-term emotional healing – as when highly aroused we cannot think straight. But high arousal is communicating to you that something in your life is not working.
- Relaxation methods can help and these will be explained and demonstrated - Instant calmer
- To be respectfully listened to and understood will also calm you and is an important part of LHGC practice. See 1) above
- Removing traumatic memories is often an important early step - see 4) below.
- More subtle arousal patterns will also be affecting you unconsciously and may need to be cleared – see 5) below
- LHGC therapists will give you hope - namely empowering explanations of where you find yourself and careful rehearsal of beneficial change.

4) We will quickly identify and resolve Trauma
Trauma experiences are much more common than you might imagine and LHGC therapists will be looking to identify and resolve them - early on.
Trauma is not just an awful abuse or accident and the like which can evolve into PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). For many, trauma can follow from experiences linked to loss (of a loved one or of a relationship), to bullying, to the experience of panic attacks, humiliation, guilt and much more. And the trauma can linger in the brain for years and years and impact on lives in all kinds of indirect yet damaging ways.
The good news is that LHGC therapists can clear the uncontrolled emotion of an old traumatic memory, often in one session of therapy – using the REWIND method. Then , empowering change is not just possible but inevitable.

5) We will act carefully to clear unhelpful emotional Patterns
We may have habitual, unconscious emotional responses, that impact on our capacity to live enriched and balanced lives. Healing requires that these be identified and cleared.
- The pattern could have arisen from a long forgotten traumatic experience – see 4) above.
- Or a coping strategy from childhood that still persists unconsciously
- Or a childhood motivation for compulsive behaviours that lies hidden behind an experience of embarrassment or shame.
- Or the pattern could reflect an understanding or interpretation of an experience that is neither helpful nor reliable.
Once uncovered, the emotion can then be dealt with – typically in trance.
The creative use of metaphors and stories are an essential tool for shifting patterns. Pattern shifting is about REFRAMING – which is the development of a new understanding or interpretation that empowers, builds hope and change and shifts the focus away from one’s own helpless culpability.

6) We build and heal your Resources, so you can better problem solve to get Needs met
What are those Resources?
- Memories and past experiences of success – that could be exams passed, jobs done, difficulties overcome or survived, relationships endured or enjoyed and unconsciously used capacities.
- And lessons learned – after all you have survived to this time and there will be reasons for this.
- You will have dreams and hopes, even if they are buried deep down – what are they and how can they be resurrected realistically?
- The resources that LHGC therapists look for are those hidden gems – lying by the road side, hidden perhaps underneath rubbish and stones.
- And finally, these are your Resources as understood by the Human Givens:
Complex long term memory
The ability to empathise
Imagination
A conscious, rational mind
To understand the world through metaphorical pattern matching
An observing self
A dreaming brain

7) We will be flexible and sensitive to what works for you
LHGC therapists never quite know how an intervention or an approach will impact. So we will try different approaches - be flexible in other words.
And Small Steps
We will be satisfied with small steps – to see what works without necessarily being too ambitious or looking to apply a comprehensive and complete solution. And you will know that from a small change, the next step will be larger.
